Linux is a complete operating system that is similar but not identical to UNIX. It runs on a wide variety of hardware. It has a reputation as a very efficient and fast-performing system. Linux’s kernel (the central part of the operating system) was developed by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Probably the most unique characteristic of Linux is that it is freely distributable. Some of the famous Linux Operating Systems are Redhat, Fedora, Ubuntu, S.U.S.E etc.
